New York Times best-selling author and primatologist Frans de Waal explores the fascinating world of animal and human emotions.

Mama's Last Hug opens with the dramatic farewell between Mama, a dying 59-year-old chimpanzee matriarch, and biologist Jan Van Hooff. This heartfelt final meeting of two longtime friends, widely shared as a video, offers a window into how deep and instantly recognizable these bonds can be.

So begins Frans de Waal's whirlwind tour of new ideas and findings about animal emotions, based on his renowned studies of the social and emotional lives of chimpanzees, bonobos, and other primates. De Waal discusses facial expressions, animal sentience and consciousness, Mama's life and death, the emotional side of human politics, and the illusion of free will. He distinguishes between emotions and feelings, all the while emphasizing the continuity between our species and other species. And he makes the radical proposal that emotions are like organs We don't have a single organ that other animals don't have, and the same is true for our emotions.

Mama Last Hug Animal Emotions and What They Tell Us About Ourselves Audible Audio Edition Frans de Waal L J Ganser Recorded Books Books Reviews

  • We humans like to think we are something special, that we have qualities no other animal possesses. Many people believe that our emotions are among the things that make us human. Primatologist Frans De Waal used to go along with this prevailing belief, but he has spent many years studying our closest relatives, and he says “More and more I believe that all the emotions we are familiar with can be found one way or another in all mammals, and that the variation is only in the details, elaborations, applications, and intensity.” In Mama’s Last Hug he makes his case for this position, and the result is both fascinating and convincing.
De Waal says that modern emotion research puts too much stress on language, and that is part of the problem. We humans don’t use language to recognize and respond to emotions of other humans in our daily lives; we observe; and DeWaal uses observation as his scientific tool to argue engagingly, but also convincingly, in favor of a rich emotional life for animals other than humans.
He won me over in Chapter 1 with a description of a moving reunion between Mama, a 59-year-old chimpanzee who was on her deathbed, and 80-year-old Jan van Hooff, who had been De Waal’s dissertation advisor and who had worked with Mama for many years. If you are skeptical of De Waal’s description, the reunion video is available on YouTube, and to me there is no doubt about Mama’s genuine joy at seeing her old friend.
If DeWaal’s wonderful anecdotes do not convince you, consider his credentials. How often do you read a book by an IgNobel Prize winner? For those of you not familiar with the Ig Nobel prizes, they have been awarded annually since 1991 (on the Harvard campus but not by Harvard) to "honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think." The paper that won the Ig Nobel for De Waal was called “Faces and Behinds”, and it was a study in which his team learned that apes have a “whole-body” image of familiar individuals and could even pick out individuals they knew from pictures of that ape’s derriere. My first reaction, of course, was to laugh, but then I had to recognize that this was clever work that tells me something rather impressive about apes.
I had more laughs, some more sad moments, and a lot of thoughtful moments throughout the book. Do read it; I am confident that you will come away with a greater feeling of kinship with all the creatures, great and small.
  • Frans de Waal has always offered insightful looks at animals and this most recent book is no exception. Some of this will be familiar to those who have read de Waal’s other books, but there is new information and insights here, as well.

Here’s a look at the contents, including the subheadings within chapters, to give a better idea of just what this book covers
    Prologue
1 Mama’s Last Hug An Ape Matriarch’s Farewell – recognizing ourselves; Mama’s central role; alpha female; finality and grief
2 Window to the Soul When Primates Laugh and Smile – express yourself; from ear to ear; That was funny!; blended emotions
3 Body To Body Empathy and Sympathy – wisdom of ages; monkey see, monkey do; kissing the sore spot; the good and the bad; rat sympathy
4 Emotions that Make Us Human Disgust, Shame, Guilt, and Other Discomforts – a thirsty horse; an eye for an eye; pride and prejudice; guilty as a dog; the yuck! factor; emotions are like organs
5 Will To Power Politics, Murder, Warfare – like an alpha male; political tantrums; murder; drums of war; female power
6 Emotional Intelligence On Fairness and Free Will – celebrating the cerebral; cucumber and grape monkeys; the ultimatum game; free will and b.s.; stand by me
7 Sentience What Animals Feel – meat and sentience; Chrysippus’s dog; evolution minus miracles; no fish no cry; transparency
    Conclusion

A very worthwhile read, but that’s JustMe.
  • From his 1982 Chimpanzee Politics on, animal ethologist de Waal has explored and commented on the parallels in human and animal (primarily simian) behavior. This book is only the latest –the twelfth- in a long going dialogue, the last of which was 2016’s Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? This book is thus about similarities between humans and animals, and the similarities are apparent and profuse. As De Waal notes repeatedly in this book, why should we be surprised that Nature repeats itself? It is simpler to build modifications on a common platform and in most respects, there is little difference structurally or functionally between ape and human. But the book is also about emotions and the role they play in intelligence. If you have read the work of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio (whom De Waal cites), it won’t come as a surprise that emotions play a vital role in our decision making process. Block emotions and you can no longer decide anything. Emotions and intellect are a package in humans, not separated entities. And De Waal makes it clear that animals, not just humans, feel these motions. A good part of this book is an attack on the science-based bias that body is inferior to mind, and then, that animals are somehow distinct from humans in our essential functions-- they don’t feel the emotions we do and thus we cannot apply to them labels like affection, grief, shame, guilt and envy.(De Waal has interesting comments on the significance of deny in social animals.) For De Waal, it is fairly simple humans, simians, all the way down through colony fish, benefit more in the long run from cooperation than from out and our war, and thus we all have developed –evolved- ways to moderate our behavior in groups, and emotions are a key part of this they give us advance but flexible signals (unlike rigid Skinnerian responses) to guide our choices in potentially fraught situations.

As always, De Waal draws on hard and observational science both, and draws acute and sensible from what he observes.
  • This book is a true page turner and it is both fascinating and informative reading that re-connects us with the animal inside of ourselves. For the science junkies out there, this book is a must!
  • Frans de Wall has outdone himself with this impossible to put down book on the similarities between ourselves and the Great Apes. heartwarming, a book i'll re-read just for the emotional warmth it brings.

This program is read by the author.

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award.

An unforgettable firsthand account of a people's response to genocide and what it tells us about humanity.

This remarkable audiobook chronicles what has happened in Rwanda and neighboring states since 1994, when the Rwandan government called on everyone in the Hutu majority to murder everyone in the Tutsi minority. Though the killing was low-tech - largely by machete - it was carried out at shocking speed some 800,000 people were exterminated in 100 days. A Tutsi pastor, in a letter to his church president, a Hutu, used the chilling phrase that gives Philip Gourevitch his title.

With keen dramatic intensity, Gourevitch frames the genesis and horror of Rwanda's "genocidal logic" in the anguish of its aftermath the mass displacements, the temptations of revenge and the quest for justice, the impossibly crowded prisons and refugee camps. Through intimate portraits of Rwandans in all walks of life, he focuses on the psychological and political challenges of survival and on how the new leaders of postcolonial Africa went to war in the Congo when resurgent genocidal forces threatened to overrun Central Africa.

Can a country composed largely of perpetrators and victims create a cohesive national society? This moving contribution to the literature of witness tells us much about the struggle everywhere to forge sane, habitable political orders, and about the stubbornness of the human spirit in a world of extremity.

"We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families is a sophisticated and thoughtful analysis of the Rwandan genocide, including the events that led up to it, as well as its lingering aftermath. Although the book has an academic edge to it, (one reviewer said that reading it made her feel as though she were "in class"), both the author's sympathy for the genocide's victims and his longing to understand its perpetrators are deeply felt by the reader. Gourevitch explores many related themes throughout the book, including the failure of the international community to use its resources to stop the genocide, the ways in which various humanitarian aid projects, knowingly and unknowingly, bolstered the Hutu Power movement by serving Hutu refugees in Zaire, the world's inability to mete out perfect, restorative justice in response to heinous crimes, and the role that other African leaders and countries played in working to resolve and prolong genocidal violence against Tutsis and moderate Hutus throughout Central Africa."

  • I started reading this book on the eve of a trip to Rwanda. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well that night. It's hard to reconcile what happened in Rwanda 20 years ago with what the country is today. It is a beautiful, safe and welcoming country with clean streets, good roads, beautiful schools and clinics in every town. This book gives a very good account of the history both recent and ancient that led up to the genocide in 1994. The author also carries on a few years into the future as Rwanda struggles to recover. He ends the book in 1998 wondering how the country will ever be whole again. I hope he has returned more recently to see the country's transformation. You cannot help but root for Rwandans. Theirs is an amazing success story. On a side note, be wary of the account of Paul Rusesabagina. His was the basis for the movie Hotel Rwanda. Apparently, there may be some question about the accuracy of his telling of the events at the hotel. But that is not the fault of the author. He does an amazing job tracking down both victims and genocidaires to get their stories. It's a compelling read.
  • I read this book many years ago and I highly recommend it. I recall reading an article in my local newspaper in 1994 about a mass migration of people from Rwanda to eastern Congo. Until I read this book, I didn't realize that these "refugees" were Hutus fleeing Rwanda after Paul Kagame's RPF had taken the capital, Kigali. Now in November 2015, 21 years later, it appears there is a potential genocide brewing in Burundi, Rwanda's mirror image country to the south.

I was heartened to read the positive reviews of this book that were written in 2015, largely by young people who read it in school. This story isn't history, it's background and it is as relevant today as it was the day it was published. And, unfortunately, it's still happening all over the world.
  • Knowing I was going to visit Rwanda as a tourist, I wanted to have a better understanding of Rwanda’s recent history. Wow, I had no idea how much one book could contribute to my experience. In less than 400 pages, I felt I learned about as much as one could about the colonial history, the genocide (before, during, and after), as well as the culture, people, and their traditions.
During my visit, the knowledge acquired from this extraordinary book allowed me to better appreciate and understand Rwanda today, as well as provided me the ability to have very intelligent and revealing conversations with many Rwandans.
This was not just a book of facts and figures, but a comprehensive collection of all that were involved during the Genocide. While there are plenty of first hand accounts from the victims themselves, Phillip Gourevitch was also able to interview both Tutsi and Hutus’s as well as military leaders, clergy, NGO’s, and many others trapped in this insane period. His access to Paul Kagame, currently Rwanda’s very successful President, allowed for a perspective not typically found in historical accounts of the Genocide.
The authors insight into the colonial history shows how ethnic differences were effectively manufactured first by Germany than by Belgium as their obsession with dividing and classifying the population to preserve power would culminate into this Genocide that would claim more than one million babies, children, grandparents, mothers, and fathers.
Rather than a spontaneous event, the very title of this book makes perfectly clear that this conflict was not only years in the making, but very public with daily radio broadcasts and government communications speaking the necessity of ridding Rwanda of those “cockroaches”.
Perhaps though what was most revealing was the deliberate indifference the rest of the world would have. Even after the atrocities, the political fear of the West to actually declare it Genocide as this would require a protocol of help and support. However, nothing quite hits you harder than the very fact that just a few thousand UN Soldiers, that was in fact requested by the commanding officer in charge in Rwanda at the time, would have avoided the majority of the killings. Instead, without even the basic machines and infrastructure of Nazi Germany, over 330 Rwandans would be slaughtered EVERY hour.
A fair amount of the book also explains how the global political community post-genocide would allow France to continue to not only fund the Hutu military that kept on slaughtering, but allow these leaders a safe passage out of Rwanda and avoid punishment by establishing refugees camps along the border.

Gourevitch’s also carefully writes about how one day teachers, priests, colleagues, family and neighbors that had lived together would, the very next day, slaughter their students, congregation, family members, and people they had worked with for a long time. For one of the most Christian countries in Africa – faith and religion actually expedited the genocide as thousands of Rwandans would flee to local churches where the were easily executed.

Finally, the author does spend enough time on one of the few bright spots of humanity, in particular how creative, determined and successful Paul Rusesabagina of the Hotel des Mille Collines (“Hotel Rwanda”), not just saved thousands of lives, but was also one of the only source of information to the outside world.
During my visit to Rwanda, it was surreal to be walking/driving on the same roads and visiting the same places that I had read about that just twenty years earlier was covered in bodies and blood. Moreover, having multiple conversations with the very same people that were either victims of dead family members, or the perpetrators of the senseless massacre left me somehow hopeful in humanity as not only was I warmly accepted by all that I met, but I could not sense a desire for revenge.
  • We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families is a sophisticated and thoughtful analysis of the Rwandan genocide, including the events that led up to it, as well as its lingering aftermath. The student is called to read (and listen to) each story and the associated questions, to try to answer, to listen to the answers and to repeat them.
In some cases the understanding of the story is favored through a translation in English.
In other circumstances, symbols and illustrations are used.
The repetition of listening and reading allows an acquisition of grammatical skills.
The method used is particularly suitable for people who have little time available for studying with the classical method.
Stories can be heard while doing sports, while traveling and other activities that do not require mental commitment.
-------------

River Clan Shifters Paranormal Bear Shifter Romance Series edition by Celeste Raye Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

  • A great read with some unusual twist and turns in the relationships amongst shifters, vampires and witches. Would recommend to any who like the genre
  • I enjoyed every single book in this series! I think everyone will enjoy reading these books as well! I will definitely recommend this series to others!
  • I really enjoyed reading this series. A great example of love conquers all, and a great lesson for the rest of us.
  • I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
The Sacrifice 2 In the first book you had a shifter mate with a vampire and their child is the first of his kind. Now you have a shifter and a witch. Well, there is a lot more power there. This is going to be something else all together. Excitement and danger all around. Very good story and the saga continues.
Revenge 3 Family, some times you wish that you did not have to think of them. Listen to them or take the lectures from them. Colin and Alice had that to. Alice's mother and aunts did something that is coming back to haunt them and Alice might have to pay for what they did. Colin is there to protect Alice and make sure she is safe. I hope that he can pull it off. Very good story.
Endless Possibilities 4 Travis and Denise, Travis is Alpha of a part of the River Clan under his brother Cal. Denise is a Vampire that is over a thousand years old, very powerful. Something is going on. Why is Denise in Travis' dreams? Very good story, I liked it.
  • I will start by saying I am a huge fan of Celeste. I adore her writing style, normally the characters and stories flow with little effort. However with this series it seemed the relationships were forced which in turn didn’t make things flow as well as it could have. I understand the concept of alpha males but there’s alpha and there’s just being an a$$. This may sound like I didn’t like it and that’s not so, I would recommend this I just prefer some of her other series over this one. I voluntarily reviewed this book for an honest review.
  • River Clan Shifters Paranormal Bear Shifter Romance Series Edition
    by Celeste Raye
I love Celeste’s writing style. This set is absolutely a must read. As Always Celeste’s Writes A Great Story This set is all about Frederick, Colin and Travis. There is a war between Shifters and Vampires. There’s alot of chemistry and passion in this Set. Will this guys find love or will the War destroy them. I would recommend this box set to all my friends. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book."
  • Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. The river clan are back better then ever. The vampires covens has attraction the attention of the local witches will they aid the shifters or turn their backs on the fighting between the clans until the war is on their own door step? This book set was amazing story of powerful alphas at work to reclaim what is theirs. The villains that come from within and without is cause for a thrill ride of ups and downs.
  • First off I want to say that I am a fan of Celeste’s writing style; her Shifters and Vampires are endearing. Storyline unfolds beautifully and keeps the reader interested. Cover Art is tasteful and well done. This is well worth the $.99 price tag. "I voluntarily reviewed this book for an honest review"

For Cyrus Massoudi, a young Britishborn Iranian, the country his parents were forced to flee thirty years ago was a place wholly unknown to him. Wanting to make sense of his roots and piece together the divided, divisive and deeply contradictory puzzle that is contemporary Iran, he embarked on a series of journeys that spanned hundreds of miles and thousands of years through the many ebbs and flows of Iranian history. From the border with Turkey to that of Turkmenistan, from the Caspian basin down to the Persian Gulf, his journeys took him from the mythological first kings of Iran, to the Elamite kingdom, the eras of Cyrus and Darius, the glory of the Sasanians, the shock of the Islamic Arab conquests and the later Mongols, Safavids and on to Khomeini, Ahmadinejad and beyond. Rich portrayals of Sufis and ageing aristocrats, smugglers and underground rock bands are all woven together with history, religion and mythology to form a unique portrait of contemporary Iranian society. And, like a fragile thread running through the heart of the narrative lies Massoudi's poignant personal quest; his struggle echoing that of Iran itself, as it fights to forge a cohesive modern identity. With its tensions of young against old, reformists against reactionaries and the computer against the Qur'an, it is a battle with global implications for a future that is poised so precariously between promise and ruin.
Land of the Turquoise Mountains reveals a world beyond the propaganda-driven, media fuelled image of fractious, flag-burning fundamentalism, and provides a compelling glimpse both into the heart of a deeply misunderstood nation and into what it is to seek out and discover one's heritage.

Land of the Turquoise Mountains Journeys Across Iran Cyrus Massoudi 9781788318341 Books Reviews

  • Beautifully written. Very informative.
  • A must read for Iranians, especially the younger generation who left their county at a young age or were born abroad and have been subjected to 35 years of constant harsh negative publicity by the mass media in the West. So much so that many have been reluctant to admit their true nationality. In a simple, well written, fluent and concise manner, the author carries the reader back several millenia to depict how Iran has contributed to world civilization in religion, philosophy, poetry, literature, arts, architecture, astronomy, medicin, sciences, agriculture and ....
Travelling the four corners of the country with a back pack and associating with natives of different tribes and ethnicity, the author depicts well the complex and inconsistent psyche of the Iranian and portrays well the ongoing struggle between new and old, modern and ancient, liberal and reactionary.
  • Fascinating account of a country I knew very little about before. Also a brilliant tale of someone raised in the UK, but with a very strong desire to discover his heritage.
