America Before The Key to Earth Lost Civilization eBook Graham Hancock Reviews

  • I received Graham Hancock’s new book in the mail from the publisher to review a little under a week ago as I write this review. I reached out to St. Martin’s Press back in February and offered to review it and, although I received a polite response indicating that I’d be considered, I was somewhat surprised to actually receive it just days ago, nearly a week ahead of its official release date in the United States (it’s been available in the UK for weeks now). My surprise was that the publisher either didn’t vet my previous reviews of pseudoarchaeology or that they did and were willing to take a chance anyway.

Having provided the above disclosure, let me say that though I didn’t spend money on the book, I will make an effort not to be swayed by the “gift.”

If you Google the word “pseudoarchaeology” then click the first link, which is probably to Wikipedia, Graham Hancock’s photograph is displayed prominently at the top of that page. If you read this review to its completion, you’ll understand why.

    The Book

The book itself is thick. Weighing in at nearly 600 pages, it has 30 chapters broken down into 8 parts. That said, it reads very well. It isn’t dense by any means and, though Hancock references quite a bit if real science, it isn’t overloaded with jargon or technobabble. In fact, Hancock’s writing style is generally very good. I found myself annoyed at some of his writing habits (“the reader will recall…,” etc.) but I wouldn’t expect this to bother most others. For the average reader who isn’t scientifically inclined, Hancock does a better than average job explaining concepts. At least to the extent that he actually understands them.

Hancock begins the book with sections discussing the Serpent Mound in Ohio, the Cerutti Mastodon site in California, ancient DNA (aDNA), and earthworks and dirt in South America. Early on, he begins his love-hate relationship with archaeologists as a theme that continues as an undercurrent or sub-plot to his overall narrative. On one hand, he’s clearly enamored with archaeologists and the work that’s been done that suits his own ideas. On the other, however, he’s clearly upset that archaeologists refuse to let him in the club—to give equal deference to these ideas. If you stick to the end of this review, you’ll understand why.

    Brother, can you paradigm?

The overall theme develops slowly. Hancock simmers the pot as he slowly introduces each premise he believes leads up to it. But the sub-theme is right there in our face from chapter to chapter archaeologists aren’t to be trusted because they are resistant to “new paradigms.”

He’s immediately on the offensive and continues through to the end, accusing archaeologists and archaeology as being an institution that doesn’t want change and will ruin careers to see to it that none of it happens. The dead horse he beats over and over is the Clovis first hypothesis. That there were people prior to Clovis is something he says, “archaeologists have recently been dragged kicking and screaming to accept.” As example, he mentions the work of Jacques Cinq-Mars, who insisted years ago that he was finding pre-Clovis materials at Bluefish Caves in Alaska.

“As a result of such attitudes, funding drained away and Cinq-Mars had to stop his work, only to be proved correct, many years later, by a new scientific study…”

    Hancock, p.58

I can’t speak for Cinq-Mars and the extent to which his career was affected by the Clovis-first hypothesis. But, then, neither can Hancock. Archaeologists are people. Some people excel in their jobs; others not so much. The Clovis-first “paradigm” as the fringe are so fond of saying (“paradigm” is a sciencey sounding word) went out of fashion decades ago. Are there still some old-timers clinging to it? Perhaps. But there are some very well-to-do archaeologists who were on the cusp of discovering pre-Clovis back when it was made a part of history.

Here’s how it works scientists obtain data. That data are analyzed and more data are obtained based on new research questions… and so on. Eventually, a provisional conclusion is arrived at—usually when the data reach some sort of plateau or some overriding reason exists to think the data aren’t likely to change. For the Clovis-first hypothesis (it was always a hypothesis more than a “paradigm”), older sites were just not yet found. And once they started to show up, there was evidence that peopling North America had to occur after 13,000 years ago due to the small window of opportunity provided by an “ice-free corridor” and lowered sea-levels that created a land-bridge across the Bearing Sea.

Archaeologists, rightly demanded strong evidence before accepting a pre-Clovis hypothesis. This, they demanded of themselves. And they met the challenge. All conclusions in archaeology, as with any science, are provisional. They’re waiting sufficient evidence to either support or revise them as conclusions. Sometimes they’re completely scrapped and something very new takes its place. In the case of Clovis-first, some would say the revision is small. The Clovis culture still exists in the archaeological record. Everything that was found of them is still present. But we now know that there existed cultures before this technology came about. Let’s not forget, “Clovis” describes the technology not the societal norms, kinships, and beliefs of the various peoples that made use of it.

The alternative would have been to simply accept a new hypothesis as a provisional conclusion, willy-nilly and without sufficient evidence. Of course, all would have turned out fine. Pre-Clovis is the correct way to think. But such a slippery-slope of letting just any-old hypothesis in as a provisional conclusion just won’t work. If it wasn’t hard to change a provisional conclusion for a new one, where would the line be drawn? At Vikings in Minnesota? At “bigfoot?” The nephilim? The Annunaki? Polka-dotted unicorns that breathe fire and traded corn with China 25,000 years ago?

Chances are, I lost the average fan of Graham Hancock somewhere between “Vikings” and the “unicorns.” But who gets to draw that line. Hancock would like it to include his own idea. Let’s press on to see why it’s a bad one.

    Guilt By Association

I won’t spend any time on the Cerutti Mastodon site here. It has its own problems, but one of them is now Graham Hancock. But I found it interesting that Tom Deméré initially declined to meet with Hancock, then did so with what seemed to be open arms if Hancock’s account is to be believed. It’s interesting because Hancock mentions later in his book that “Egyptologists avoid me” and spends several pages discussing how different factions of the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis were upset that he incorporated each other’s’ material. Apparently a video of Hancock’s was posted to an anti-pseudoscience website and one of the scientists “achieved some unwanted negative-celebrity among his colleagues. He was challenged about the wisdom of hosting [Hancock] and suffered the indignity of wondering about the effect the … video might have on his career and reputation.”

The recent association of Deméré with the pseudoarchaeological television show hosted by Megan Fox and now the pseudoarchaeological notions of Graham Hancock are likely to do little in helping him win over his colleagues.

    Chopping Down a Cherry-Picked Tree

In the final few sections of the book, Hancock returns to North America where he describes some of the earliest known earthen mounds in North America, such as Watson Brake and Poverty Point. Then he heads up the Mississippi River Valley, ultimately to Ohio and the more recent mounds there. All the while describing alignments, the solstices, lunar cycles, astro-archaeological features, and so on. But this is also where he dives head first into specious comparisons between Native Americans and ancient Egyptians. He readily admits he doesn’t think there were any cross-cultural transmissions of information, and that he accepts the “orthodox” explanation that geographic and temporal separation of these two cultures means that they didn’t have the chance to share information.

But it’s after his section on the global cataclysm that only affected North America that he finally comes clean on what his game truly is. He states several times through the book that he believes that there was a “lost civilization” which was a “third party” responsible for the similarities we see in multiple cultures. An example is the constellation Orion seen as relating to the land of the dead in both Egyptian and Native American cultures. Never mind that the constellation we understand to be Orion today, probably the easiest to spot north of the equator. And that it “travels” east to west, seasonally. Or that, the sun coming up in the east is so easily associated with birth and renewal and, as it sets, associated with death and ancestors. The common element need not be a “lost civilization.” It’s already people. Humans. Homo sapiens. The same common element for all of his other spurious correlations.

By this time, I’ve waded through Hancock’s cherry-picked science. I say “cherry-picked” because he avoids a lot of the parts that don’t work for him. For instance, he likes where Raghavan et al (2015) and Skoglund et al (2015) mention the “Australasian signal” among some of the ancient populations of South America. He likes it a lot. In fact, he mentions is many times after chapter 9 where he introduces it. And even though he provides the quote where Skoglund et al clarify that it was the founding population that was more closely related to indigenous Australians, New Guineans, and Andamen Islanders than to other Native American groups, he still missed the significance. Or at least he didn’t adequately share that significance with his readers.

What the Australasian genetic “signal” really tells us is that we should be on the lookout for populations that were fast-moving or small. There’s also as good a chance that this Population-Y (the Australasian population in question) began in Southeast Asia then moved both north toward Beringia and south into Melanesia and Australia and what we’re seeing is where they ended up. Hancock doesn’t share these bits along with many others. They don’t jive with his shtick.

What’s the Gist of It All?

Overall, America Before is presented as a carefully picked set of genuine scientific notions, mixed with a few pseudoarchaeological ideas (like spurious similarities between Egyptian and Native American cultures) in order to set Hancock up for his final pitch. One that he holds back until he thinks he’s won the lay-reader over. His easy-to read writing style makes the reader comfortable and probably sympathetic to him personally. He carefully poisons the well here and there with “the skeptics will say…” etc.

There is much within America Before that I can actually agree with. And there is much that I could “debunk” in this book if I cared to. I suspect the comments below will give me ample opportunity if the Hancock acolytes and cult following (he truly is a charismatic figure with a following) respond. But the reality is, none of the premises Hancock puts forth, even if every single one were correct, would mean that his conclusion is right. He conveniently provides a conclusion that cannot be tested or evaluated by science since it isn’t within the realm of science.

    Here’s his conclusion

“My speculation, which I will not attempt to prove here or to support with evidence but merely present for consideration, is that the advanced civilization I see evolving in North America during the Ice Age had transcended leverage and mechanical advantage and learned to manipulate matter and energy by deploying powers of consciousness that we have not yet begun to tap.”

In short, Hancock believes this “lost civilization” used telepathy, telekinesis, remote viewing, and healing powers to transmit their legacy to the world.

I wondered throughout the entire book what mechanism he would suggest. I honestly thought it would be the power of oral history, perhaps tied to mnemonic devices (figurines, rock art, landscapes) or religious ritual to ensure fidelity.

    I was not expecting ESP.

  • People love to trash Graham Hancock. Hancock has earned a reputation as someone who pushes ‘pseudoscientific theories’. This immediately makes him irrelevant to a large portion of the population interested in archeology and history. His theories are not outlandish. There’s really no one else out there who writes books like Graham Hancock does. If you love mysteries, archeology or history you will enjoy this book. I love reading his books because he presents hypotheses and data but ultimately ends up leaving the questions open ended and for you to decide. He is not a whack job. If you’ve ever heard him speak it is clear that he is very articulate and thoughtful. There seems to be a theme in archeology that ‘history can only be this old because we’ve only found things this old’. Every couple of years a new discovery is made that completely turns the accepted archeological dogma on its head. It was thought for a long time that the Clovis culture was the first significant culture in America. Why? Because ‘we haven’t found anything older, so this has to be correct’. It does not seem hard to believe that people who lived off the land and built shelters out of wood and earth would be hardly detectable thousands of years later. Hancock proposes that civilizations are much older than generally accepted and sites like Göbekli Tepe have validated him. There’s no aliens helping Mayans build temples in this book. His theory that civilizations across the world seem to share similar myths and knowledge does not seem far fetched to me. The human race had to have started somewhere and spread across the globe. Myths and knowledge had to have spread with them. Read the book, take the journey and hear what the man has to say then decide for yourself. You may not agree with all of his points but one thing is clear Hancock is a very intelligent man who has done lots of research. His books are exciting and very well written.
  • He's one of the leading researchers on this so I'll happily buy all of his books to support his investigation into our past!

check him out on the Joe Rogan Podcast if you haven't already.

Making a trip to Peru soon marking the beginning of many more adventures to come regarding my visiting of ancient structures.
  • Hancock dismantles conventional archaeology and ancient world history in the well-written book. Many will find it more than intriguing, perhaps mesmerizing. Bravo!

The Woman in the Window A Novel Audible Audio Edition A J Finn Ann Marie Lee HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • This book is like a trip through IKEA. You need one little thing, but once you find it, you realize its taken you two hours to find what you're looking for and now it's going to take you that long to get to the exit. And you have to plow through even more floors full of crap you were never interested in to begin with. Only this is worse, because you are trapped in the massive building with people you don't want to have anything to do with. It's not worth the trip. Don't even start.
  • I never give up on a book.....until this one came along, that is. According to the synopsis, this sounded like a good story idea. For the life of me, I can't imagine this one being a best seller. I guess I am not the only one who reads a synopsis and thinks the book is bound to be good. Well, believe me, from now on, I will read the sample before I buy the book. Just a bunch of chopped up phrases, that don't even make sense. I guess there is still hope for me writing a best seller. I believe even I could do a better job; after all, I am only 88 so I guess there is still hope. I will just get some of my good friends to write a glorified synopsis for me and WHOOPIEE!!! I might even get a Puliizer Prize.
  • It's a sad commentary on the state of contemporary fiction when a book this bad is not only a best seller, but an acclaimed one. It starts off well, but quickly becomes boring, and its two "shocking revelations" are obvious from the beginning. Finn is a completely inept writer (his use of language is hilariously bad), and I find myself truly angry that I spent $13.99 for his execrable work.
  • I was not a fan of this book. An alcoholic pill popper who somewhow, while online, always said and did the right thing, but in real life was a mess. A lame twist at the end finished the book quickly and made no sense. The middle of the book dragged. I am not hard to please with books but this just didn't do it for me.
  • This book was dissappointing, considering how much hype it has generated. It seemed to be following the way Girl on the Train was written, but never got going for me. I ouind the repetitive description of the main character, Anna- pouring wine, drinking wine, sloshing wine, spilling wine on her robe, putting her robe on or her robe falling open- very tedious and boring. It wasn't like I needed it to be described for each day, as it was always the same for her. Every day. As i was reading, I wondered if the author was copying and pasting these descriptions over and over when he talked about Anna's daily intake of wine and then her sloppy behavior. The story was kind of interesting, but I found the descriptions to be too redundant. Another reader said it well when she said that the book could have been much shorter.
  • This is a dark, atmospheric thriller that in the first 40% of the book had me completely captivated. Anna Fox is absolutely fascinating and rather humorous. She is unreliable and she is, of course, an alcoholic. You can’t have a psychological thriller these days with a sober person, can you? It would certainly break formula, but I digress.

The reason this book ended up being 3.5 stars for me is because it is simply too long. The first 40% or so, I was completely enraptured, couldn’t put the book down and invested on the development. Then things sllllloooooowwwwwed waaaaaayyyyyy dooowwwwwwnnnnn. There was a lot in there, but this book could have easily been 100 pages less and still told the same story. The ending picked up and some of the twists definitely got me.

I can see why this book has generated such buzz and is already being talked about as the “It” read for 2018. But for me, it dragged too much for it to be a stand out thriller. This is the type of story that doesn’t need filler pages, you can just tell it from start to finish and give me the 1 – 2 punch.

I would recommend this book, as I mentioned, it is sure to be highly buzzed about, so I recommend you give it a go and see what you think. Maybe it is just me who thought it was too long
  • I heard that this novel was the breakout debut novel of 2018, written under a gender-neutral pseudonym by a male editor of thrillers at a major publishing house. It was, reviewers said, steeped in film noir, well written, fast paced, original, and a love letter to classic Hitchcock films. It has, of course, already been optioned as a film, probably starring Reese Witherspoon.
    SIGH.
I read thrillers regularly, and have read all of the classic mysteries (including every Agatha Christie novel, all of Sherlock Holmes, Dorothy Sayers, et al.), and I assure you that The Woman in the Window is a typical domestic thriller. The protagonist is unreliable, she’s a tortured soul, she’s an alcoholic downing buckets of Merlot and popping pills left and right, she’s a pathetic and dull basket case who can’t leave her sprawling home and spends all day on the internet, drinking, and spying on her neighbors. She thinks she witnesses a crime but can’t rely upon her sad, wine-soaked brain; hence no one buys her rantings about the neighbors trying to whack one another. Or not. Blah blah.
It bores me simply typing up the plot summary of this novel, which amounted to nothing more than a Rear Window/Girl on the Train copycat. I understand that unreliable female narrators sell, but please give readers some credit. We’re not total dupes. More importantly, we are sick of these women who can’t get their sh1t together and are always drunk and falling apart. Give us a female narrator with some grit, some backbone, some moxy, and drop her into a truly original and engaging story. It may not become a bestseller (God knows why not), but it will certainly earn 5 stars from this disillusioned reader. I’ve reached my limit of recent lame thrillers.

She Explores Stories of LifeChanging Adventures on the Road and in the Wild Gale Straub 9781452167664 Books Reviews

  • I have been listening to Gale's She Explores podcast for a few years now, and am fascinated by every episode of what women are doing in the outdoors. I was thrilled to hear she was coming out with a book, and wasn't disappointed. This book contains short essays from women she's met over the years of creating her podcasts (Women on the Road is the other one she does), and their insightful lessons they've taken from nature. This New York Times best seller was the inspiration for the first season of American Crime Story on FX, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr.; John Travolta; David Schwimmer; and Connie Britton.

The definitive account of the O. J. Simpson trial, The Run of His Life is a prodigious feat of reporting that could have been written only by the foremost legal journalist of our time. First published less than a year after the infamous verdict, Jeffrey Toobin's nonfiction masterpiece tells the whole story, from the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman to the ruthless gamesmanship behind the scenes of "the trial of the century". Rich in character, as propulsive as a legal thriller, this enduring narrative continues to shock and fascinate with its candid depiction of the human drama that upended American life.

Please note This audiobook is a recording of the original 1996 edition of The Run of His Life. It does not include an Afterword added to the 2013 reissued edition.

"Really great book on which the recent American Crime series was based. The book is less sensational and more factual and is the better for that distinction. It provides a lot of background info on all the major figures in the case and some much needed historical and cultural context to help me understand better why the case was tried the way it was, and why the jurors made the decision they made, and most of all why the country was so polarized by the case and the verdict. I was a newly married twenty something with a baby at the time of the murders and the court case and it was fascinating to go back all these years later, with the benefit of age and maturity and the benefit of this writer's meticulous research, the contextual information I described, and his skill and talent as a writer, and reexamine this event in a way that taught me something new."

The Run of His Life The People v OJ Simpson Audible Audio Edition Jeffrey Toobin Stephen Bel Davies Audible Studios Books Reviews

  • The popularity of the FX mini-series loosely based on this book led to me to read Mr. Toobin's account of the "Crime of the Century".

Having been as transfixed as many others by the events of the trial of O.J. Simpson in the mid-1990's , I was curious to read yet another account of those events. This book shed more light on the case largely because it was written by "an outsider" with a legal background rather than one of the participants.

Obviously there is no secret in how either of the two trials documented in this work ended yet Toobin is able to keep our attention through both delving into the background of the prosecution staff; defense team; Judge Ito; and many of the police officers involved in the investigation; and by giving his perspective on the evidence.

Mr. Toobin makes no bones about how he believes it was the failure of Marcia Clark "to see the forest for the trees" in how she chose to conduct herself throughout the investigation leading up to the trial and in presenting the prosecution case at trial that accounted for the acquittal. He is equally harsh on Chris Darden and Lance Ito for their lack of aggressiveness in pursuing their role's in the debacle that led to O.J. Simpson's acquittal in the criminal trial.

What was particularly interesting was the portion of the book related to the civil wrongful death suits that followed the criminal trial. Toobin's take on how the plaintiff's attorneys handled much of the same evidence presented in the criminal trial with a much different outcome is a counterpoint to the failure of the L.A. District Attorney's office under Gil Garcetti to obtain what should have been a "slam-dunk" verdict of guilty.

A good read on when the justice system fails because of ineptitude.
  • Having read the July 1994 New Yorker prediction that OJ would be exonerated due to racism, I have always been curious as to why that prediction came to pass a year later. Jeffrey Toobin, the author of the article, tells the story in this book. The defense successfully turned the trial into a race based issue instead of a dual murder issue. Instead of a hung jury outcome sought by the the defense, he trial ended up with a not guilty outcome due largely in part to the arrogance of the prosecution.

I felt that this book was a well-balanced account of how the prosecution lost the OJ Simpson case in 1995.
  • The only book I have ever read about the OJ Simpson trial, and I feel as though it's the only one I'll ever need to read.

This is the book for anybody who has found themselves baffled by the verdict on the trial of OJ Simpson announced just 25 years ago, and as this book reveals, it didn't simply boil down to a glove. The glove did effectively serve as the explanation in a culmination of a vast array of other factors that swayed the verdict of this case, race being the primary focus, but it wasn't simply the glove itself.

Toobin compiles a fascinating, insightful, work of fine journalism at its finest.
  • O.J. Simpson was good at running. He ran with a football at U.S.C. winning the coveted Heisman Trophy and went on to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a star for several seasons as a running back on the Buffalo Bills. He also ran way in the famous Bronco Chase from police arrest following his murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, his battered ex-wife, and Ronald Goldman a waiter at the Messaluna Restaurant who was returning sunglasses which had been dropped earlier in the evening while the Brown family were dining.
OJ was arrested and the most famous murder trial in the history of the racially divided city of Los Angeles was underway. The trial ended in an acquittal for Simpson. The defense had accused detective Mark Fuhrman of planting the glove found at 360 Rockingham the home address of Simpson. All of these facts are well known.
This book was first published in 1996 and has been reissued in paperback in the light of a drama series on the case and a five part television documentary. Toobin's book is the best one to read because
    a. He gives a detailed account of the evidence in the case-Toobin's book makes clear that Simpson was guilty of the horrible crimes!
b.Toobin is good in exploring the racial tension existing in LA. Simpson was portrayed by Johnnie Cochran, Robert Shapiro, F. Lee Bailey and
Barry Schecht as a victim of police conspiracy and the planting of pivotal evidence.
    c. This book is very good at giving the reader mini-biographies of all the major lawyers and witnesses in the case. Also given is a brief biography of O.J. Simpson.
d.For objective and balanced reporting this book is the definitive book on the Simpson case. Essential and well written and researched.
  • Really great book on which the recent American Crime series was based. National Geographic World Classic Pacific Centered Wall Map Laminated 46 x 305 inches National Geographic Reference Map National Geographic Maps Reference 0749717123267 Books Reviews

  • I have been looking for a world map like this for several years and finally found this one, by National Geographic no less! It didn’t disappoint! This map is Pacific centered, not the usual Atlantic centered format. It means the Pacific Islands are not split at the dateline and stuck divided on both edges of the map, instead of integrated and visable as a whole. While this is particularly attractive to people who have lived in the Pacific, as I have, it also strikes me as a more appropriate layout of our world. High quality map, nicely laminated. Highly recommended!
  • This is a fantastic map for teaching. It avoids the distortion of both the Mercator and Gall-Peters projections. The map closely reflects the Winkel III or Kavrayskiy VII projections, though it's centered on the Pacific Ocean rather than the Atlantic. Centering the map in this way also ensures that continents aren't cut off or duplicated and better demonstrates the scale of the globe by forefronting the largest ocean. The southern pole is a bit distorted, but inlays in the upper corners show the poles more accurately. This is an excellent map for displaying in a classroom or an office.
  • Nice world map from a different view. Place names are all very clear, just kinda tiny. Some reviewers said it's laminated- it isn't. It's on nice glossy paper though. My pics show the tube label, the map pinned above my 60" desk for scale, and the ISBN # if you want to search it on a lookup site for exact details. I plan to mount it to frame it mounted on foam board w/o glass so I can put pins on it.
  • I purchased two of these maps, and I was very pleased. It comes in a nice plastic tube that is easy to wrap. The map itself is beautiful. The blue is vibrant and, I love how it is Pacific Centered. We got it framed and are currently using it to remember and track all of our family vacations.
  • The Pacific projection is exactly what I needed for my DVD Movie I am making showing a travel route that I took across the Pacific Ocean that began in Orlando, Florida to Guam, Saipan, and Cairns, Aus. I would recommend mounting the map between clear acrylic sheet material and a masonite back mounted in a frame, as it will develop some air bubbles if you use spray contact glue, or use a cabinet contact cement that is brushed on both the back of the map and the mounting sheet.
  • beautiful! This map is excellent for anyone interested in alternate map layouts from the traditional Atlantic (GMT) centered maps.

I study the Ring of Fire which wraps around the Pacific Ocean, so this map is far superior to a standard Atlantic Centered map for my studies.
  • Particularly nice map perspective. I use it with my short wave radio to figure out where people are with whom I am speaking.
  • love how little old NZ is centre

A New York Times Bestseller

A dramatic, inspiring memoir by legendary rock climber Tommy Caldwell, the first person to free climb the Dawn Wall of Yosemite's El Capitan

"The rarest of adventure reads It thrills with colorful details of courage and perseverance, but it enriches readers with an absolutely captivating glimpse into how a simple yet unwavering resolve can turn adversity into reward." (The Denver Post)

A finalist for the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature

On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history - Yosemite's nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after 19 days on the route. Caldwell's odds-defying feat - the subject of the documentary film The Dawn Wall to be released nationwide in September - was the culmination of an entire lifetime of pushing himself to his limits as an athlete.

This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit. Caldwell's affinity for adventure then led him to the vertigo-inducing and little understood world of big wall free climbing. But his evolution as a climber was not without challenges; in his early 20s, he was held hostage by militants in a harrowing ordeal in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Soon after, he lost his left index finger in an accident. Later his wife, and main climbing partner, left him. Caldwell emerged from these hardships with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. He set his sights on free climbing El Capitan's biggest, steepest, blankest face - the Dawn Wall. This epic assault took more than seven years, during which time Caldwell redefined the sport, found love again, and became a father.

The Push is an arresting story of focus, drive, motivation, endurance, and transformation, a book that will appeal to anyone seeking to overcome fear and doubt, cultivate perseverance, turn failure into growth, and find connection with family and with the natural world.

"There are many negative reviews linked to this book; however, they are referring to another book of the same name and different author. The CLIMBING book The Push by Tommy Caldwell had great flow from past to present and was well written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book cover to cover and slowed down when I got to the Dawn Wall send because I didn't want it to end. My husband has a strong desire to climb big walls and alpine climbs, while I enjoy single pitch sport climbing (scared of heights). I felt like I was there on the wall with them."

The Push A Climber Journey of Endurance Risk and Going Beyond Limits Audible Audio Edition Tommy Caldwell Johnathan McClain Penguin Audio Books Reviews

  • This book was so much more than I expected and I had expected an excellent book. I'm pretty familiar with Tommy's climbing history, the kidnapping and the Dawn Wall epic. Still, Tommy went so much deeper than many sports autobiographies. This book ranks in my top 10 biographies of all time. I went to Tommy's presentation at the Patagonia store in San Francisco and discovered that he is an excellent speaker as well, not flashy, but entertaining and engaging. I would say the same thing about this book-it's engaging, entertaining and excellent!
  • There are many negative reviews linked to this book; however, they are referring to another book of the same name and different author. I felt like I was there on the wall with them.
  • Wow. I knew Tommy Caldwell had a life made for a book like this. How could you tell that life story and not fascinate? But Caldwell digs deep, far beyond what was necessary to write an entertaining book. Reflections on life, death, faith, risk, beauty, love are rarely smarmy, and often revelatory--for the author as well as the reader. This is not only the best climbing book I've read, but also one of the best memoirs.
  • I really enjoyed reading this autobiography (thus far) of the world class rock climber Tommy Caldwell. The book is better written than most in this category, and is hard to put down. Caldwell gives fascinating accounts of his many dramatic life experiences, including being held hostage by terrorist rebels during a foreign trip, as well as his epic climbing adventures. The core of the book concerns his preparation for and detailed description of the free climb of the Dawn Wall route on Yosemite's El Cap, widely considered the most difficult free climb ever done. However, Caldwell offers the reader much more, and provides candid accounts of the highs and lows of a professional athlete's life, including the failure of his first marriage, self-doubts, and depression. The entire "journey" to the top of the Dawn Wall can be read as a path to redemption and fulfillment. Even though I am not a climber, I found Caldwell's story inspiring and memorable.
  • Very disappointed in this book even though I am a big fan of TC and wear his shoes. 30 percent of the book is unapologetic cut and paste from his first book, it was painful to have to relive the angst over the girlfriends and the kidnapped drama all over again. I have never seen this quantity of cut and paste reprinting before in a book, I felt very ripped off by the lack of effort put into this. I've followed his career, he has things to write about!!! This could very well be categorized under "young adult romance" instead of climbing. This will most definitely not earn a place on my shelf next to "Solo Nanga Parbat" and my Boardman/Tasker Omnibus.
  • Its another book which I considered reading after Alex Honnold's " alone on the wall" and I would say this is way better. I had seen some clips of Tommy Caldwell's climb on dawn wall but reading this book does the justice of feeling the actual thrill of being on the wall. Also I believe Caldwell's life is pretty inspiring . Every time he went through a bad patch ,he had converted that to his advantage doing extraordinary things.
  • This was really quite an incredible book. Tommy is a very talented writer, in addition to being a remarkable climber. The memoir does a very good job of mixing the personal aspects of his life with the adventurous parts in a way that lets you see how his perspectives and priorities evolved as he got older. I climb so I am already familiar with all of the climbing jargon in this book so I can't be objective, but I thought he did a very good job of defining it, and with explaining some of the history around the climbs.

If anyone reads and enjoys this book, there is a documentary called Valley Uprising that came out a few years ago. It's the history of climbing at Yosemite Valley and digs deeper than this book does. This was a little before the free climb of the Dawn Wall. I don't remember if Tommy is featured in it or not, as the movie spends a lot more time in the 60s and 70s, but some of the supporting characters in his book are, like Dean Potter and Alex Honnold.
  • Wow...The Push is a job well done...it is a story about climbing and life and oftentimes very intense experiences. The Push is written in such a way that anyone can embrace it whether you climb or not. I found the author to be very open and honest and details out an exhilarating account of human will, frailty, closed mindedness and open mindedness, focus, dreampower, work ethic and of individual and group growth.
The Push is one of the most incredible books I've ever read...I almost hated it to end.
This is an adventure and a journey not to be missed.

Comic Book Pressing and Cleaning A HowTo Guide eBook Jacob Gadbois Reviews

  • Wast of money. All this info can be found for free. No secrets here. Very short book on a large topic, which much of is not covered here , or the author is unaware or not trained on. I wish I could get my 9.99 back.
  • I was afraid this book was going to be too overloaded with obscure details regarding the subject matter. Many authors/technical experts get carried away in that department. The scope of the lesson is perfectly understandable and it covers every question anyone might have regarding pressing and cleaning comic books for the first time. It stands alone as the only how-to guide for cleaning and pressing comics. Considering it costs 15 dollars per comic book to press and clean while waiting months to get it back from the presser, it's a no brainer to learn how to increase your collections value yourself!
  • I bought this book to learn how to press my own comics. When trying to ask for advice on how to do this on CGC & CBCS forums I was told it was not allowed. I'm surprised at how restrictive some companies are with pressing techniques. It was a relief to be able to find a book like this recently released. At over 100+ pages I feel that it is easy to understand and I used the advice in it to order all of the necessary equipment I need to begin comic pressing. Will update my review in a couple weeks after I've tested the techniques on some guinea pig comics.
  • OUTSTANDING book for those wanting to learn the tricks of the trade. As someone who has been doing this for 5 years now, this has provided a great, thorough guide for those interested in the process! No more secrets, or price gouging by the big name pressers! Get those grades up kids!! -Mr9.8
  • This book IS SPECTACULAR! The author does a marvelous job pointing out every detail in the pressing and cleaning process. I especially appreciate the specific instructions on building a humidity chamber, pressing square bound comics, and pressing modern books with glossy pages.
  • Over all the book is good. Being that this is about pressing and cleaning comics the pictures shown as examples and for reference are lacking quality. I was interested in washing and in the table of contents refers to 1.5% and on pg. 46 talks to 3% guess I'll experiment 0-0. It brings another level of interest to comic-book collecting.
  • Loved the ease of access diving into this book. Very well explained without trying to get too technical. An absolute must have for anyone interested in trying it themselves. Thanks Jacob!
  • This guide is very thorough, well thought out and easy to follow. A must have for comic book collectors. Jacob Gadbois is the new super hero for comic book collectors!
